3rd Annual Wilson Globe Geography Bee

Larry Coffin explains the rules for the 3rd annual Wilson Globe Geography Bee in the auditorium of Oxbow High School on Saturday, November 14th.

Larry Coffin and Peter Richards alternately asked questions about the geography of New England to the two divisions.

Bradford Elementary Principal Charles Barrett is shown with the The Crusaders. This team from the BES took first place in the Junior Division. They are (l-r) Otis Hudnut, Jake Senecal and Connor Bean. Jake is holding the prize, a National Geographic atlas.

Bert Dodson, Steve Daly and Steve Rounds of the Globe Carers were the Senior Divsion winners.

Jamie O'Connor of Team Vermont from South Regate won a game of "rock, paper scissors" over Bradford's Tim Copeland after the judges ran out of questons trying to break a tie between Copeland's Medical-Industrial Complex team and Team Vermont for second place in the Senior Division. On Saturday, November 14, 2009, sixty-three local residents on 21 3-person teams competed to answer questions about the geography of New England. It was the Bradford Historical Society's 3rd Annual Wilson Globe Geography Bee. Held at the beginning of Geography Awareness Week, it brought together nine junior teams (Grades 4-8) and twelve senior teams (Grades 9-adult).

Each division attempted thirty multiple choice questions posed by Peter Richards and Larry Coffin. One example of a question: "According to the US Dept. of Energy, the Northeast Kingdom of Vermont has an average growing season of (a) 100-118 days (b) 123-130 days (c) 133-145 days (d) 146-157 days?" The answer is (b).

The top two teams in each division were awarded atlases donated by the National Geographic Society. Each individual in the top team in each division will receive a copy of the 2010 World Almanac.

The event has been held annually to raise money for the restoration project of an original James Wilson globe owned by the Bradford Historical Society. This year's event raised over $1000 toward the Bicentennial project of the Wilson Globe. Below are listed donors and teams for this year's event.
